Challenge - The task at hand was to replace a decades-old facility with a new generation of student-life facilities in the heart of campus. The site for the Rec Center is along the south side of Straub Quad and west of Hayward Field, the legendary track and field venue.
John worked closely with the Physical Education Department and Student Recreation to develop strategies which allowed both programs to thrive in the new facility. John designed a modern state-of-the-art
student-life facility that provides “third places” for students to socialize and study. His concept for the Rec Center included replacing the austere Esslinger Hall, which fronted on Straub Quad, with a vibrant and welcoming terrace at the main entrance.
